SMYRNA — The Class AAA state golf tournament will have a distinct Rutherford County flavor.
The Siegel boys and Riverdale girls both won the Region 4-AAA tournament at Smyrna Municipal Golf Course Friday, earning a bid to the state tournament on Sept. 25-26 at WillowBrook Golf Club in Manchester.
Five other area players also made the state tournament field aside from the winning teams.
"It feels good to go to state no matter how you get there, and this is my third time. But I'm glad I'm going with my team this time," said Riverdale senior Erica Edwards, who took low-medalist honors in the girls tournament with a 3-over par 75.
"I think I won with consistency and because I had a good attitude. It's a mental game, and I made sure I didn't let anything bad carry over to the next hole."
Edwards advanced to her third straight state tournament.
Riverdale ran away with the girls title with a team score of 151. Runner-up Blackman shot 180, and Siegel posted a 189.
Riverdale freshman Reagan Kinnie finished runner-up with a 76, and teammate Summer Jenkins had an 89.
"I knew we had a good chance to win it if we put together some good numbers, and this was definitely a good day for my girls," Riverdale coach Ernie Rivas said. "If they do that at state, I think they're capable of competing there too."
Siegel's Melissa Kiker (85) and Blackman teammates Cailyn Johnston (87) and Kelsey Spivey (93) each made state as individuals.
