Riverdale made holes in Oakland's defense

Riverdale did something no one had been able to do against Oakland's stout defense Friday night.

It consistently moved the chains.

Riverdale's offensive line opened holes that no previous Oakland opponent had opened all season in the Warriors' 13-10 overtime win in the 39th Battle of the 'Boro.

Riverdale (4-1, 2-0 in District 7-AAA) ran for 189 yards against the Patriots (3-2, 1-1). Oakland had given up 57.5 yards a game on the ground entering the contest.

"We knew what we had to do," Riverdale senior lineman Chris Mayes said. "We just settled down and drove it down the field every chance we had."

Riverdale methodically moved the ball down the field. The Warriors had 59 offensive plays in the game to Oakland's 39. Riverdale held the ball the majority of the first half, giving Oakland just two possessions and two plays prior to the half.

Oakland senior Zach Barnes' fumble ended the Patriots' first drive. Tee Mayberry broke a 44-yard TD run in their second.

"I thought it was a weird game, especially the tempo," Oakland coach Thomas McDaniel said. "Basically, we had just two possessions in the first half.

Riverdale is the lone wing-T team the Patriots have faced thus far this season. The Warriors' misdirection and reverses gave Oakland's defense problems. And it came against an Oakland defensive line that has been hyped to be one of the state's best.

However Riverdale's line of Zach Taylor, Brandon Constant, Charles Martin, Bryan McCluskey and Chris Mayes didn't bat an eye. The Warriors' line, which averages 287.6 pounds across the line, showed it has plenty of muscle.

"I thought their offensive line whipped our defensive line and our inside linebackers have to be sound fundamentally," McDaniel said. "I thought they did a tremendous job calling plays.

Riverdale coach Ron Aydelott said the offensive line's performance wasn't much of a surprise. He said the team worked hard in the offseason.

"We felt coming in that our kids were big and physical. (Assistants) Jordan Hankins and Rickey Field have done a great job in the weight room.

"These kids want to show people that they are for real."

Tale of the tape

Oakland had one of the most dominating defenses prior to Friday night's Battle of the Boro. However, Riverdale showed it could move the ball on Oakland. Riverdale finished with 288 total yards — 189 on the ground and 99 passing).
