Riverdale DT Smithson Named to ESPN 150 Watch List
Before each high school football season, ESPN releases a list called "ESPN 150" — a group of the 150 most talented high school football players in the country compiled by Scouts, Inc.
The 6-foot-2, 275-pound defensive tackle has been named to the ESPN 150 Watch List, a list of thousands of players who are, essentially, finalists for the ESPN 150 list — which will be released in a few weeks.
"I was surprised I was on there," said Smithson, one of 104 defensive tackles from around the country named on the list. "I think it's all based off last season, because I haven't gone to many camps."
Smithson helped anchor a Riverdale defense that led the Warriors to an 11-1 record in 2007. He did participate in one camp this summer — at Vanderbilt — and he said he caught the eye of some of the Commodores' coaches.
According to Smithson, he has received recruiting letters from Vanderbilt, MTSU, Northwestern, Arkansas, Kentucky, Louisville and Georgia Tech — but no offers yet. For now, he's just focused on the upcoming season.
"We're a young team," Smithson said. "We lost a lot of people last year, and a lot of people need to step up."
