Why chosen: Wherever McConnell lined up is usually where tailback Michael Wilmore ran. He helped Wilmore rush for more than 2,000 yards and almost never came off the field. He also punted and played defensive tackle.

Why chosen: Early in the season, Rayford tore his ACL. But instead of undergoing surgery, Rayford put on a knee brace and served as one of the best blockers in the Midstate. He also played defensive tackle despite his lack of mobility.

Why chosen: Smith's postseason was like something out of a fairy tale. In consecutive weeks, he eliminated Grundy County 17-15 and Smith County 10-9 on field goals in the final seconds, including a 50-yarder to shock the Owls in the state quarterfinals.

Why chosen: This 4A Mr. Football winner was the most versatile defender on a Hillsboro team that captured its first state title. Fisher's quickness and great instincts helped him tally 143 tackles in 15 games to accompany his two TDs and two fumble recoveries. He also played tight end.

Why chosen: The Region 6-4A defensive MVP had 78 tackles, including 12 for loss. A Vanderbilt recruit, Bradley did everything for a defense that started seven freshmen and sophomores. ''He even lined up at quarterback one night,'' Springfield Coach John Offutt said.

Marcellus Tibbs, Hillsboro

Why chosen: Tibbs was one of the best run-stopping safeties in the state, recording more than 50 tackles during Hillsboro's 14-1 championship season. On offense, the Burros' featured back averaged more than 10 yards per carry en route to 2,449 yards and 28 TDs.

Why chosen: Moore was the top cover corner and an exceptional tackler for the Bruins, who allowed just 93 yards per game through the air and made 19 interceptions. Moore made big plays on both sides of the ball, catching 17 passes for 307 yards and six TDs.
