Dennis Harrison

"Bigfoot," as he was called in his playing days.  At 6'8", 280 pounds, Harrison ravaged opposing offensive backfields for four years at Vanderbilt. He was named defensive MVP of the Peach Bowl in 1974 and was a first-team All-SEC selection in 1977. Harrison's postseason slate after his stellar senior season included the Hula Bowl, the Blue-Gray Classic and the Japan Bowl. Harrison's prowess on the field extended to the classroom as well, where he was selected academic All-SEC in 1976 and 1977.

The Philadelphia Eagles drafted Harrison in the fourth round of the 1978 NFL Draft, and during his seven-year stint with the Eagles, the burly defensive lineman was a Pro Bowl player in 1983. He participated in Super Bowl XV and still ranks sixth among all-time Eagle sack leaders, despite playing several seasons before sack statistics were officially kept by the NFL.

After finishing his NFL career with the Atlanta Falcons and the San Francisco 49ers, Harrison returned to middle harrison2.gifTennessee to coach at the high school level. At Franklin Road Academy, Harrison served as an assistant coach for seven years, including a state championship season in 1991. Harrison then headed the Page High School football and wrestling programs for three seasons before returning to Vanderbilt as part of Woody Widenhofer's staff in February of 1997. His wrestling squad finished second in the state in 1996 and he was named Tennessee's Class A/AA "Coach of the Year" for his efforts.

Harrison is a member of many athletic organizations in the area. He belongs to the Board of the Tennessee Sports Hall of Fame, the Middle Tennessee NFL Hall of Fame, the Nashville Black Coaches Association, the Baptist Foundation Board, the NFL alumni and NFLPA.

Making his home in Nashville with his wife, Ida, the Harrisons have 12 children, including seven daughters: Idette, Danielle, Dianne, Della, Deedee, Isabelle and Dorie; and five sons: D.J., David, Daniel, Isaiah and Ian; and three grandchildren. David (NBA's Indiana Pacers) and D.J. (Finland) are professional basketball players.
