And certainly not against Oakland.
West dove into the end zone on 4th-and-1 to give the Warriors a 13-10 overtime win over third-ranked Oakland on Friday night at Oakland in the 39th Battle of the 'Boro.
"We've been working our butts off all season," said West, as he limped toward the locker room after the game. "No one is going to quit on this team.
"This means everything. I had to get my pride back from last year. I left it all out on the field."
Oakland was forced to settle for a Trevor Hornsby 32-yard field goal after an offensive pass interference on the second play of overtime pushed the Patriots back to the 25-yard line.
West finished the game with 47 yards rushing on 15 carries. He was 14-of-19 passing for 99 yards as Riverdale (4-1, 2-0 in 7-AAA) opened up its passing game against Oakland's stout defensive line.
Riverdale finished the game with 190 rushing yards on 41 carries against a defensive front of Oakland (3-2, 1-1) that had been called one of the best in the state.
"We just didn't stay on our keys like we were supposed to," said Oakland senior defensive tackle Tim McAdoo, a Kentucky commitment. "We're going to come back. We're not going to just lay down."
Oakland finished with 176 rushing yards on 34 carries and had three passing yards. The Patriots mustered just 58 rushing yards in the second half and overtime.
Oakland junior running back Tee Mayberry had 153 yards on 28 carries to lead the Patriots. However, Mayberry had just 52 yared on 14 carries in the second half.
"We would have liked to put more points on the scoreboard and take pressure off the defense, but a win is a win," said Riverdale coach Ron Aydelott. "This win comes against a great, great football team.
"We talked all week that if we could get three scores, we could win. We were fortunate to just need two."
Riverdale's Adam Davenport's 1-yard run with 4:36 left in the third quarter tied the game 7-7. That score came after Riverdale had a chance to get points on the scoreboard in the final minute of the first half.
The Warrriors went for it on fourth-and-2 from the Oakland 3-yard line and was stopped when Darius Coffey tackled West for a 1-yard loss.
"The bottom line was we didn't come over here to play close," Aydelott said. "We came over here to win. I told the kids that, and the coaches told the kid that.
"Really, we didn't consider the field goal."
Tee Mayberry's 44-yard touchdown run with 7:44 left was the game's lone score in the first half. Mayberry broke free from the line and got a Riverdale safety to fall down when he tried to change direction.
